Emotional temperature is checked against the scholarly mainstream first; if the reading conflicts with a documented consensus, the reading changes, not the consensus
Dates, ages, courtesy names and offices must be traced to a primary source; without one the claim is written as a hypothesis, and competing accounts are listed
Tonal patterns, rhyme categories and form are checked against the Pingshui rhyme tables, not guessed

When not to use it

Modern free verse, a plain translation, or a poem whose author and dating are unknown or thinly documented
You want a short verdict or a quotable line, not a full reading
